Seeking Moments Day 16 of 30: Long Walks With Old Friends

Just a simple moment of gratitude for carving out the time to walk in the sunshine on this perfect-temperature day, 8.5 miles, twice around a familiar loop, with a dear old friend who I haven’t connected with in some time. We went deep, we said all the things, we laughed, we cried, we walked and we talked and we walked some more. We stopped to smell fragrant flowers and marvel at some cool climbing trees our kids would love.

Friendships are a fascinating adventure.  If we are lucky, we get to have one in this lifetime. If we are truly blessed we get more. My most beautiful connections were all born with a spark.  A pop of interest, a “me too,” a feeling of being home…from moment one. What a gift it is to look for opportunities to nourish one another with time and presence and a listening ear, a warm cup of coffee, a needed hug, long dinners that linger until the wee hours…. over and over again across a lifetime.  Jane Fonda once said, “women’s friendships are like a renewable source of power.”

Today, I’m grateful for one of mine. ?

I told my grandkids that you don’t need a lot of friends, but a few very good ones and hopefully one you will know for decades. I met my best friend in high school and 54 years later we still are the best of friends in spite of the fact that we have lived on two different continents, I married an American who was stationed in my home country Holland and she married a Spanish doctor. We have managed to see each other twice or three times a year. plus the frequent 2 hour whatsapp calls. We have been on many trips together over the years, with or without our husbands, have visited each other in the USA or Spain but mostly have met in Holland. We went on a 3 week Thelma and Louise road trip (minus the ending) through Europe and are planning another one once this Covid has subside., probably the last one since we are in our 70’s now.
A friend is th one to whom you tell all your stories but a best friend has lived them with you.
    Keep writing your beautiful blog.
