Happy Sunday! Today was a day mostly at home…as most days are anymore. It ended with an impromptu gathering with neighbors in our driveway with wine at twilight, surrounded by droves of happy kids, in masks, playing football and wiffle ball and riding bikes and scooters, which then, as evening fell, turned into a hunt for fireflies, glow in the dark games, and giggles that floated into the night sky. We sat in Adirondack chairs and chatted about our favorite Netflix series, discussed plans for future summers, and mused at the delight of a Japanese crepe. We smiled adoringly at the kids as they scooted by, squealing with glee, overjoyed just to be together.
The world is big. This driveway moment is so small. Importantly, though, it felt so safe and so familiar and so lovely. The truth I am learning though is that good things don’t always last. Some do, but not all. So whatever good thing you’ve got, and likely we’ve all got at least one, please do your best to acknowledge that you’ve got it in the first place, even if just for that moment. Try to see it. Feel it. Breathe it in. Commit it to memory. Sometimes beautiful moments like tonight will warm your heart on a future rainy day. Whatever it is that you’re living and doing right this minute (and at any other minute of any other day), if you’re awake and if you’re lucky, one day can deliver joy to you a second time, and a third, and as many times as you pull them from your memory’s treasure chest. Tonight, I’m ever thankful for simple driveway drinks with dear friends.
